Hey all wine lovers,

Probably I’m the first Indian to join this community. In India wine is not drunk on that high scale as it is drunk in other countries. I have NOT tasted a sip of wine yet…...still joined this community bcoz I’m eager to know about it.

Tell me, what’s the need of wine? Don’t you live without it? On what occassions you drink? Is it really really needed?

Wine probably isn’t needed by anyone, but is loved by many. Here in Canada wine has greatly increased in popularity during the past 10-20 years, with many of those who favored beer in the past now favoring wine. Wine is most often shared with friends or family in a social setting, often along with dinner.

I hope that answers what you were asking, if you have anymore questions feel free to ask.

Very true – I suppose it’s more of a ritual or tradition of sorts, the same way people drink champagne at New Years’ Eve or have turkey with gravy and cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving, a part of our culture.

I was born and raised in Canada, but wine isn’t really my preference. I know a lot of people who do enjoy wine – especially having “wine and cheese” parties. I also know a few people who don’t like the taste of wine, though. I suppose wine is seen as one of the more sophisticated alcoholic beverages to consume as opposed to beer. Wine tasting and selection has become an art to many people.

Indian food and wine don’t particularly seem to go together. Please correct me if I am wrong – wine usually accompanies continental food.

However, in recent times, many people seem to be taking to wine – both due to it’s unique taste and the health benefits associated.

@ chandra_avinash – you’re right about wine accompanying continental food. I suppose a lot of food from European cultures such as Italy and France are served here, especially in restaurants – so it would seem natural that they bring their drinks to match the food as well.

I don’t know much about wines (hopefully this community will teach me more about it), but I know certain types of wines are selected for particular dishes – so that the taste of the wine will compliment what you are eating.

Drinking a glass or two of red wine each day has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, certain cancers and slow the progression of neurological degenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.

Yes, wine tends to go well with continental food. North Americans tend to drink water with Indian food :D

LoL – I can understand that!

There are times when I end up drinking water like a camel after some really hot food. Wine definitely doesn’t go with Indian food – theres just too much spice all over. Btw, anyone tasted spiced wine?

Some wines can go with Indian food. You’d have to stick with very crisp white wines (like a pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc).

Zwitten, I am a big wine drinker. It is pretty much the only alcoholic beverage I drink. I would say I enjoy it because finding a good wine is like hunting. There are so many out there and no two are alike. It provides constant entertainment because of this. Not only are there different wine regions (France, Italy, USA…even Canada!), but you need to navigate different grape varieties, different blends, different years… It really is a lot to learn which adds to the pleasure.
